San Antonio: Thirty-Nine Lashes If Blacks Caught with No Pass or Permit

Slaves in San Antonio: Thirty-Nine Lashes

People who try to make up Black history often try to act like San Antonio treated Black people nicely. This is being done now as some want people to believe that the Alamo had nothing to do with slavery. They sold slaves at the Alamo in 1861 and even had slave codes during that time. Section 2 of the slave code in San Antonio read, “Every slave who shall be found at large in the streets of said city or off the premises of his or her owner, employer, or the person having the legal charge of such slave, after fifteen minutes, after the hour specified in the preceding section, without a written pass or permit, from the master, mistress or such person having the legal custody or charge of such slave, which pass shall not extend beyond one night and shall state the purpose for which it was given, shall be apprehended by any marshal, or police officer of the city, and be detained in custody, in jail of said city, or otherwise, until the next morning . . . .”

“That every slave or slaves, who shall be found occupying any house, building, room, or premises separate, and apart from the premises of the owner or person having the legal charge or control of such slaves or slave, such house, room, building or premises not being occupied by some white person or persons, to whom the services of such slave or slaves may have been hired, shall be arrested, and punished by the infliction of not to exceed thirty-nine lashes . . . .”

San Antonio Slavery/Section 7

The law went even further in describing the horrors of San Antonio slavery in Section 7 by saying, “That every slave or slaves, who shall be found occupying any house, building, room, or premises separate, and apart from the premises of the owner or person having the legal charge or control of such slaves or slave, such house, room, building or premises not being occupied by some white person or persons, to whom the services of such slave or slaves may have been hired, shall be arrested, and punished by the infliction of not to exceed thirty-nine lashes . . . .” Section 17 even spelled out the punishment for Black people for playing cards. It read, “That no slave or free person of color shall be permitted to play at cards, or any other game of chance, and any slave or free person of color so offending shall, on conviction, be punished by the infliction of not exceeding twenty lashes, which punishment may be remitted by the mayor upon payment by the owner, or person having control over such slave, a fine to be assessed by the Mayor, of not less than five nor more than ten dollars, and the cost of the proceedings.” San Antonio had an ugly racist past just like any other slave owning Confederate State in the South.

There were also plenty of slave plantations in Bexar County and the surrounding area. One plantation was the Robert W. Brahan slave plantation right off Broadway Street at the back of Fort Sam and he owned 59 slaves. There is a street still named after this racist at the location and is now called the West Fort Neighborhood. Interestingly, the die hoards of Alamo myth have honored a mulatto slave master named Hendrick Arnold who supported slave owners and sold his own daughter into slavery. Unfortunately, the Alamo Trust Board continues to dabble in racist lies about the Alamo and racism in San Antonio. Several artists were suckered punched into building a statue of Arnold at the Alamo who was a disgrace to freedom. There were 18 slave catcher districts in Bexar County that the Bexar County Commissioners Court were authorized to pay after a Seminole Native American, named Wild Cat, vowed to free slaves in the area. One such district was District No. 2, and included Asa Mitchell. Asa Mitchell controlled a slave plantation at Mitchell Lake and now the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center.

Missing Out On Voting’s Value: Texas High School Principles Have a Legal Responsibility

Missing Out On Voting’s Value

In view of rapid changes, to election and voting laws, it is becoming even more critical that additional concentrated efforts be initiated that will broaden the pool of registered and informed voters.

Herein, we look to the Secretary of State, whose office handles election procedures, in Texas. According to the Texas Election Code (TEC) Sections 31.093 and 13.046, the Texas Administrative Code Chapter 81, and the National Voter Registration Act, outlines requirements “for public and private high school principals to act as deputy voter registrars” to provide voter registration opportunities to eligible high school students and campus employees. Is this happening in San Antonio?

Click below to Read the Full Code:

Furthermore, the campus principal designate an administrative staff member or teacher, in writing, to serve as the High School Deputy Registrar.

As far back, as October 2021, the University of Houston’s Election Lab found that “only a quarter of Texas high schools were in compliance.” This information was presented at the 2021 Election Sciences, Reform and Administrative Conference (ESRA).

Research has suggested that “voting is habit-forming” and high schools are a critical training to initiating that pattern. It’s also been found that two-thirds of 18 to 29 year olds, who planned to vote, said that their high school education “made voting feel important.”

During my high school experiences, in the 1960’s, we were exposed to Civics (government) classes, music, speech and drama competitions, which had a positive influence on our minds and led us to seeking higher education and enjoying a greater awareness of the world around us!

Fast forward to the Early voting numbers this year, from 2/20 to 2/28, on four college campuses, here in Bexar County:

Northwest Vista – 1,207 votes cast.
Our Lady of The Lake – 374 votes cast.
Palo Alto College – 204 votes cast.
San Antonio College – 399 votes cast and UTSA (1604 campus) – 702 votes cast.

Further inspection revealed minority enrollment, at each campus was:

Northwest – 72%
OLLU – 77%
Palo Alto – 70% and
UTSA/1604 site – 67%.

It appears that we must begin to invest more energy, into engaging the youth, especially those between 18 years of age to 24 years of age. The objective is to assist them, in their development of political awareness and responsibility, particularly as the future unfolds.

This issue further demands accountability from School Boards, Superintendents and those who are required to address the community’s concerns. More to come, in the manner of responses from the aforementioned parties.

Trayce Sands Spearheads a New Direction for Black Comic Characters Once Created by White Artists

Comic Book Creator Brent Trayce Sands Has Big Plans For The Future of Superhero Movies, Starting With an Animated Film of His Own

In the city of Sacramento, located in a downtown shopping plaza not far from where the Kings play, is iMPOUND COMICS. Owned and operated by 35-year-old Brent Trayce Sands, the store was originally launched as an outlet for Sands to share some of his independent comic books and has grown into a full-fledged media franchise, now at the precipice of the future of the superhero industry with an animated movie currently in production.

Sands kick-started his shop on a whim in late 2020, at first just looking for somewhere he could sell his small collection of self-made comic books, and potentially build a following. But when he reached out to the DOCO (Downtown Commons) shopping mall asking if they’d be interested in purchasing any of his work, they saw the potential and gave him the keys to his own storefront right off the bat. Having only three comic books ready for distribution at the time, Sands was bewildered and grateful for the opportunity, but not quite prepared for running an entire store. With a chance too good to pass up, he decided that this was make or break, so he got to work. Four months later iMPOUND COMICS was born, and Sands was already on his way to creating a franchised superhero empire.

In an interview with The Sacramento Observer from just over a week ago, Sands opened up about his experience creating iMPOUND COMICS, and his aspirations of promoting Black superhero characters imbued with authenticity and with original perspective. According to Sands, “even though Ryan (Coogler) directed Black Panther, he didn’t create Black Panther; Stan Lee did, you know. Same with Miles (Morales). Miles wasn’t made by a Black person. So I think there was still a part of that culture that was missing in the authenticity of the character itself… Even these dope cultural Black characters weren’t created by Black people at the end of the day.” Sands is hoping to bridge this gap with some of the comic book characters he’s created, like Anthony “Impound” Endsley, a former MMA fighter-turned-superhero, and Lady Monarch, a young woman who is the reincarnation of the Egyptian goddess, Ma’at.

Sands now divides his time between his store in Sacramento and Hollywood, where he’s actively working on the soon-to-be-released animated film “Impound: Rise of the Unbound.” The upcoming movie is expected to be at just over an hour in length, centered on Sands’ heroes Impound and Lady Monarch, and has already begun to generate significant anticipation pending its release.

NAACP Reacts to ‘Good Times’ Trailer: “Choices Were Made and Approved”

0

The civil rights organization spoke with creatives involved with the controversial animated series, who said the show will include social commentary, but notes that Netflix has nonetheless chosen to market the series with negative tropes.

Opinion Column by Kyle Bowser — Shortly after Netflix released the trailer for its new adult animated series Good Times two weeks ago, our office started receiving calls and emails.

Inspired by the iconic live-action sitcom of the 1970s, the new show’s use of the beloved title conjures notions of familial fabric and community cohesion, amid challenges of generational poverty and stifling social policies that perpetuate inequitable caste conditions. Fans of the original series likely expected to see descendants of the Evans family engaging with their circumstances in adherence to the ancestral creed: Love through the pain.

But to the considerable consternation of many viewers, the new Good Times trailer seems to establish a world of Black characters navigating chaos and dysfunction, largely driven by drugs, violence and discord. While sibling tension is a common dynamic within TV family portrayals, the trailer resolves such banter by offering a father’s regret for failing to employ prophylactic measures to avoid parenthood. A voiceover referencing patriarch James Evans’ dedication to providing for the family is then followed by the animated dad’s version of fatherhood: a threat to kill the [N-word] dating his daughter. When asked for advice on advancing son Junior out of a third term in the 10th grade, a school official suggests the young man launch a pornography site. The trailer also offers a rendering of a Black heavenly deity preoccupied with playing video games. But the most absurd portion of the two-minute and 43-second clip is its prominent presentation of a drug-dealing baby. We’re treated to images of the baby shooting dice on the street, lusting for breasts to suckle and ultimately engaging in a shootout with three other thuggish Black babies.

As a leading organization for social justice and civil rights, the NAACP was called on to take action and issue a response. In an effort to gain a more complete and clear understanding of the creative direction for the new series, executive produced by the late Norman Lear, widely recognized as the creator of the original, alongside basketball great Stephen Curry and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane, the NAACP requested screeners of full episodes. Netflix declined. So instead, we contacted creatives involved with the production and asked them about their vision and execution. We were told there was a deliberate effort to “push the envelope” in the storytelling and tonality. We were told about real-life events that informed the basis for certain episodic elements, and we were reminded that the mandate of the adult animation genre is to sensationalize and exaggerate realities.

It is true that animation is not confined by the limitations of physical or psychological properties. In cartoons, cars can fly, fish can sing and, apparently, babies can sell drugs. But we wonder whether the historical relationship between Hollywood and the Black community should create caution about the use of distorted imagery and narratives that further pervert the representation of a people.

Series personnel also shared that the show is framed by a recurring indictment of “the system” for creating and maintaining oppressive conditions that plague the Black community. In fact, the promotional trailer includes an articulation of that allegation: Unnamed white men, dressed in suits and sunglasses, drop off crates of automatic weapons in the ‘hood at night, as a voiceover explains, “The system puts the guns and drugs on the street.”

Perhaps an underlying social commentary counterbalances the imagery teased in the Good Times trailer. Perhaps the full episodes provide unique entertainment value while also challenging racist social policy. All will be evident when the series launches this Friday. What is clear today, however, is the choice made by Netflix to market the show based on an interpretation of Black life as an “otherized” experience, replete with abhorrent beliefs and behaviors.

Clips used in the trailer were culled from 10 episodes of content, a vast inventory of options available to fill the short clip used to market the show. Committees of people were involved in the search for proper balance between comedy, absurdity and social commentary. Choices were made and approved. The impact of the campaign probably exceeded expectations, as negative news travels fast and people seem to enjoy commiserating in their contempt. Perhaps that was the plan.

But to be clear, there’s nothing new here. Renderings of Black life in media often serve to buoy the artificiality of white supremacy, as the NAACP explores in our media guide. While we continue to engage with media institutions to encourage reform, we also call upon our constituents to develop greater discernment in their engagement. We must elevate our consciousness for media consumption. Keen awareness of the power and consequences of media will lead us to more informed choices and, in turn, lead the industry to make necessary adjustments. To the extent that media choices are designed to satisfy the need of others to be affirmed in their false sense of superiority, we call for more accurate portrayals of the truth, deeper dimension in the exploration of our humanity and exposure of the deliberate propaganda that supports our oppression.

After all, we want Good Times too

Spurs Avoid Last Place in the West

Spurs Conclude Challenging Season with Hopeful Finish, Avoid Last Place in the West

The sun has finally set on the Spurs for the 2023-24 season following Sunday’s home win against Detroit 123-95. The Silver and Black finish the season 22-60 and managed to not finish dead last in the West. That dubious honor goes to the Portland Trailblazers who finished 21-61

Although this season was nothing short of a disaster, the Silver and Black managed to show signs of life in the second half of the season. The Spurs were 11-16 after the All-Star break and finished the season by going 6-4 in their last 10 games. This included a big win against Denver Friday night at the Frost Bank Center 121-120. That loss to the Silver and Black cost the defending champion Nuggets a #1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

“It was a good end to the season, for sure. We were playing better and better throughout the entire year. Each month we were getting better as a team and as a whole and playing more and more like the way we wanted to play offensively and defensively. Obviously, the win the other night was a huge one and then to come out tonight and play well again, I think it just goes to show all the work that we’ve been putting in all year. We continued to stay together, not get too down and just continue to go through all the tough times together and continue to grow.”, said Tre Jones following Sunday’s win.

While expectations were not exceedingly high coming into this season as the Spurs are in the midst of a rebuild, it’s my belief that most people expected the squad to do better than last season pre-VDub in which they also finished 22-60.

Victor Wembanyama was the ONLY bright spot in this clown show of a season. He introduced himself to the basketball world in dramatic fashion, making history along the way. He finished the season averaging 21 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, and a steal. It’s worth mentioning that he only played 30 minutes per game.

It’ll be interesting to see what moves the Spurs make during the offseason to bolster the squad around the Kid, to date they aren’t planning any.
