Residents across San Antonio and much of the United States will set their clocks forward one hour this weekend as daylight saving time begins early Sunday morning.
The time change officially takes effect at 2 a.m. Sunday, when clocks move ahead to 3 a.m.
The shift means people will lose one hour of sleep but gain more daylight in the evening hours as spring approaches.
Good to Know
Many smartphones, computers, and digital devices update automatically. However, residents may still need to manually adjust some appliances, including older clocks, microwaves, ovens, and wall clocks.
The time change can also serve as a reminder for households to check smoke detector batteries and update safety plans.
Why the Time Changes
Daylight saving time was first introduced in the United States during World War I as a way to conserve energy by making better use of daylight.

Today, the practice continues in most states, although there have been ongoing debates about whether the country should keep the seasonal time changes or adopt permanent daylight saving time.
When Clocks Change Again
Daylight saving time will remain in effect until November, when clocks fall back one hour as standard time returns.
For now, residents are encouraged to remember the familiar phrase: spring forward, fall back.
