Women of San Antonio: Jackie Rita

A Brighter Community: Jackie Rita’s Legacy of Service and Strength

In our ongoing effort to amplify the influence of women, we cannot overlook the images that speak volumes—images that are not only impactful but also point us toward what truly deserves our attention.

Our present focus looks at the positive development of communities, families, movements and organizations, where the  significant influence of women have contributed to improving the quality of life, for innumerable individuals and especially families in need.

One such person, whom I had the opportunity to meet some years ago, is Ms. Jacqueline (Jackie) Rita, a persistent and vibrant woman, who found herself moving about the community and having the chance to make a positive impact in the lives of others, especially for families and their children.

Upon inquiry, Jackie related that she was “born into an extended family, raised by my grandmother, although my Mom and Dad weren’t too far away.” Over time, she learned much from her entire family – “especially how to speak up.” She reported having seen children going without basic necessities and  “wanted to do something for them.”

Jackie also related that she’s “always been a caring person”, due to her grandmother’s influence and that of her parents, as “the village made me and I felt that they wanted me to succeed – not just talking with us, but, instilling in us, to care about others and especially to be kind.”

Eventually that led to the formation of the non-profit Building Brighter Communities, in association with Brandon Johnson, “founded on Christmas Eve of 2020, in the Denver Heights Neighborhood following a holiday food and toy giveaway.” It has since evolved into the greater mission of “providing a helping hand to neighbors who struggle to meet their basic needs and to provide them with the tools necessary to thrive.” Mr. Johnson also indicated that “everyday, no matter the severity of the challenges our clients face, Jackie provides comfort and dignity, while working alongside our team, to secure stability for each person we serve, as a fighter and a leader, and someone who tirelessly advocates for all of our clients.”

In response other question of what message would she want others to take away from her story she related that people should “practice doing better in order to be better.” Jackie further added an encouraging two-fold message: “stand up for what’s right and for helping others in need. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion and to help someone else when necessary.”

It’s another chance to consider how we care for those in need, with the humility to know we could just as easily be in their place.
