Health Issues Impacted By Extreme Heat at Wheatley Park Senior Living Facility
There’s been more than the average amount of media coverage, with regards to the impact of Texas’s extreme heat, and on what everyone has been experiencing in the recent past, from families, to the homeless and particularly to senior citizens.
One particular facility, where the lack of air – conditioning, over a six – week period, is the Wheatley Park Senior Living Facility, where this writer currently resides.
According to information provided to residents by management, the A/C system has been on the blink, “since mid – May”. They reported they have had six (6) companies come out to assess the issue, but none have been able to correct the problem. In the meantime, small window units have been distributed to a number of residents, to provide some temporary relief. As of Monday June 26, a new contractor arrived and additional progress is being made towards getting the system running properly.
A number of residents have come together, identifying additional issues that they feel have not been properly addressed over the past terms of management, in particular:
** Lack of adequate security, inoperable security cameras, refuse disposal, poor pest control, inadequate responses to work orders and more.
Residents have sought assistance from the Fair Housing Council, the Office of the County Commissioner and Texas Organizing Project, as well as meeting with a representative from the office of District 2 City Council, who was able to provide some box fans.
What appears to be coming next is residents will be seeking to meet with the incoming management team and provide those persons with a detailed list of issues related to their collective needs in the facility.
