Wemby Eyeing “EuroBasket 2025”, Optimistic on Full Recovery

Victor Wembanyama Nearing Full Recovery from Blood Clot

San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama, sidelined since February due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, is making steady progress. The Spurs confirmed he underwent surgery to address the clot.

Coach and National Team Plan Return Timing

French national coach Frédéric Fauthoux provided the most recent update, stating Wembanyama is “motivated to be part of the team.” He added, “We will make the decision when the time is right … but he feels good, everything is going well (in his rehabilitation)” This aligns with the Spurs’ aim of ensuring a full recovery before the next NBA season.

Aiming for Spurs Return and Summer Tournament

While a return to EuroBasket 2025 is uncertain, Wembanyama hasn’t given up on the dream. As he himself acknowledged:

“I don’t know if it’s realistic; there are a lot of uncertainties,” he said, “I obviously want to play in every competition with the French team.”

Despite this cautious stance, both Fauthoux and Wembanyama expressed hope. The priority remains his health but the aspiration is clear: to participate in the summer tournament.

Continuing Rehab—Hard Work, No Contact

Wembanyama is back to “hard work, hard lifting, and also basketball work,” he shared.

“It’s all very controlled and light. Sometimes, I feel like I would like to do more. It’s logical, a medical direction. We’re taking our time. I’m neither late nor early. It’s a process. There are definitely steps to reach that,” he added

So far, progress is steady—with strength training allowed but no on-court contact.

Looking Ahead: NBA Summer League & Training Camp

The Spurs expect Wembanyama to be fully healthy by the start of the 2025–26 NBA season, with his return targeted for fall training camp. He’s also expected to join the Spurs at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, a key step in transitioning back onto the court.

Final Word on the Road to Return

Wembanyama is not rushing the process—but the determination is clear: he’s committed to returning stronger, and hopeful about contributing in both the summer tournament and the upcoming NBA season.

“We can do it!” teammate Jeremy Sochan echoed after the EuroBasket group draw.

“Great group! Can’t wait. Victor, get ready!”

Summary:

Diagnosis: Deep vein thrombosis in right shoulder
Treatment: Underwent surgery and is in rehab
Current status: Strength training allowed; no contact yet
Potential return: Aims to play in EuroBasket (uncertain) and rejoin Spurs for Summer League and 2025–26 season
