‘We Don’t Do Kings, We Do Community’ – San Antonio Protesters

No Kings, No Chaos: San Antonio Protesters March in Peace and Power

Under the heat of the South Texas sun and the weight of a nation in crisis, thousands gathered this past weekend across San Antonio for the national No Kings Day of Defiance. But despite the fears, the boarded windows, and the whispered warnings, what unfolded was not destruction—it was unity.

From the East Side to downtown, from mothers with strollers to students with signs, the crowds were loud, proud, and peaceful. Music played. Prayers were spoken. Strangers shared water. The streets weren’t filled with rage—they were filled with resolve. No looting. No broken windows. No fires. Just people—neighbors—making their voices heard with dignity and strength.

Still, the word “protest” has picked up a dirty connotation. Somewhere along the way, it got reduced to a headline about violence instead of being recognized as the foundation of every major movement in this country. Let’s be real—we’ve all been in a situation where one bad apple messes things up for everyone. That doesn’t mean we stop showing up. It means we show up harder to prove what we really stand for.

Yes, some businesses boarded up in fear. And let’s be honest—if you felt the need to shield your windows from a peaceful protest calling for justice and equity, maybe it’s time to ask why. If you thought your customers would burn your business down instead of recognizing their own power—maybe it’s because you’re profiting from the community, not participating in it.

What we saw this weekend proves one thing clearly: San Antonio knows how to rise in unity. Not everyone ran or hid. Many businesses stood with the movement, passed out water, opened their restrooms, and stood shoulder to shoulder with marchers. That’s what it looks like when a business is in the community, not just on the block.

So, to those who stood back and watched from behind plywood, let this be your wake-up call. Your customers are not threatsthey are the reason you exist. And if you’re afraid of them walking in unity, you’re not doing the work to walk beside them.

San Antonio showed up with peace. With power. And with a message: We don’t do kings. We do community.
