“We are a family -Somos una familia”

Blanca Hernandez, SAISD Douglas Elementary teacher named HMH Awardee

Hello SAISD and San Antonio Community,

This week I would like to take the time to introduce you to an SAISD teacher named Blanca Hernandez. Ms. Hernandez has been teaching at Douglas Elementary for sixteen years. During her sixteen years at Douglas, she taught bilingual and dual language classes from Pre-k to first grade. In her classroom, she uses different techniques to help all the students understand that everyone’s culture is important. Allowing her students to embrace their cultural background and making them a part of her family makes them feel welcomed, and she always reminds them that “We are a family -Somos una familia” which build their confidence level. This confidence has taught her kids to teach others as well. She is helping create the next generation of dual language teachers. Ms. Hernandez is also well-known in our Eastside Community as a teacher, mentor, and advocate for bilingual and dual language programs.

Blanca Hernandez is the now the recipient of the HMH (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) Lighthouse Award. This is a great honor because teachers are picked from all over the nation, and out of the 500 nominated, our SAISD teacher has become the top recipient of this award. Lastly, Ms. Hernandez has a true passion for teaching, and at the end of the day, that ray of sunshine gives me hope for future teachers.
