Walkouts Aren’t Enough: Time for Democrats to Redraw Maps Too
(Op-Ed) — Let’s be clear: Republicans aren’t playing fair—and they haven’t been for a long time. In Texas, they’ve once again revived the playbook of power grabs, this time through a brazen redistricting scheme aimed at flipping up to five congressional seats to solidify GOP control. And once again, Texas Democrats are walking out to stop it.
Yes, walking out. Again.
It’s a move we’ve seen before—most notably in 2003 when the “Killer D’s” fled to Oklahoma to block a Republican gerrymander. It delayed the process, but in the end, Republicans waited them out, rammed through the maps, and reshaped the Texas delegation for a generation.
Fast forward to 2025. The faces are different. The outcome? Likely the same unless Democrats do more than flee the building.
The Other Side Isn’t Waiting — They’re Acting
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is charging ahead with unconstitutional maps. He’s not worried about public backlash, voter rights, or legal precedent. He knows power protects itself—and that delay is not defeat.
But look west. California, long considered the gold standard of good governance with its nonpartisan redistricting commission, is now drawing up partisan maps of its own—five Republican seats could be eliminated overnight if Texas pushes forward.
That’s not a tantrum. That’s a tactic.
Democrats have often clung to the high road, even when it leads straight to a cliff. But times have changed. The GOP has made clear: they’ll redraw, rewrite, and remove whatever stands between them and control.
So why aren’t more Democratic-led states doing the same?
It’s Time to Flip the Script
• To every Democratic governor: If GOP governors can redraw maps in the middle of the decade, so can you. What’s stopping you? Morality? Fairness? Those rules only work when everyone plays by them.
• To state legislatures in blue states: Start drawing. Pre-register ballot initiatives. Show Republicans you can protect your voters and your values just as aggressively.
• To Democratic voters: Stop rewarding symbolism over substance. A walkout is dramatic—but it’s not a plan. Demand your leaders fight with the same urgency as Republicans do.
This Isn’t About Maps—It’s About Power
Texas is trying to erase the will of voters. California is preparing to strike back. This is a political arms race, and only one side is showing up armed.
Walking out isn’t enough. Democrats need to walk out, redraw, and repeat—as many times as necessary.
If Republicans can game the system to win, then Democrats must finally learn to game it to survive.
