Steve Jobs and California’s Legacy of Innovation

The California coin depicts a young Steve Jobs sitting cross-legged before northern California’s oak-covered hills—symbolizing the environment that shaped his creative approach to technology and design. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “CALIFORNIA,” “STEVE JOBS,” and his iconic phrase, “MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL.”

Designed by Elana Hagler and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the coin will be available for $13.25 as part of the Mint’s American Innovation $1 Coin Program, created to honor trailblazers from each state and U.S. territory.

Honoring Innovation Nationwide

Launched in 2018 under Public Law 115-197, the program works with state leaders and experts to capture innovations that shaped the nation’s history. Final designs are selected by the Secretary of the Treasury.
