Perry recounted a time he stayed at a Trump Hotel, drawn by the businessman’s reputation in pop culture. “I wanted to feel that specialness,” he said. But after researching, he discovered Trump’s past, including a discrimination lawsuit involving Trump’s family business, Trump’s false claims about President Obama’s birthplace, and his stance on the Central Park Five. Perry described these moments as “echoes” of deeper racial undertones that influenced his decision. “There is no dream that looks like me in Donald Trump’s America,” he said, contrasting Trump’s vision with Harris’s inclusive vision for the country.
Perry used a story about a quilt his grandmother made to symbolize America’s diversity, saying, “When I think of America, we are my grandmother’s quilt – all shapes, sizes, and colors – but we are one.” For him, this unity is why he chose to stand with Harris, expressing his hope for a leader who embraces every American.
Celebrity Endorsements Divide in the 2024 Election
The 2024 election has drawn endorsements from high-profile figures on both sides. Harris’s supporters include musicians and entertainers like Megan Thee Stallion, Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, and Cardi B. On the other side, Trump has garnered support from personalities like Elon Musk, Russell Brand, and Rob Schneider, though his use of artists’ music at rallies has led some to publicly request he stop.
Perry’s speech emphasized the importance of voting for a candidate committed to an inclusive vision of the American dream – a theme resonating with many celebrities in support of Harris.
