Trump Ends Kamala Harris’ Secret Service Protection
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is no longer under the watch of the U.S. Secret Service after President Donald Trump revoked her protective detail, a senior adviser to Harris confirmed Friday.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Harris’ adviser said in a statement.
A senior White House official confirmed the move, noting that vice presidents typically only receive six months of protection once they leave office.
Biden Had Extended Harris’ Coverage to 18 Months
Under a 2008 law, the Secret Service is required to provide former vice presidents, their spouses, and their children under 16 with protection for up to six months after leaving office.
However, a Secret Service official told NBC News that President Joe Biden issued a memorandum in January extending Harris’ protection to 18 months. Trump’s decision overrides that extension.
Trump Also Cut Biden Family’s Protection Earlier This Year
This isn’t the first time Trump has rolled back protection for his political rivals’ families. Earlier this year, he ended Secret Service coverage for Biden’s two adult children, Hunter and Ashley.
Federal law requires lifetime Secret Service protection for former presidents and their spouses, while their children are covered until the age of 16. Vice presidents, however, receive far less protection once they leave office—making Harris’ situation unusual in its visibility.
