THEY DO NOT HEAR OUR SCREAMS BUT THEY WILL HEAR OUR VOTE

Politicians try to advance legislation on gun safety

Hello SAISD Parents,

Today we see ourselves still trying to find a way to deal with mass shootings. Many politicians are involved, along with many different church leaders trying to find a way to put an end to these tragedies. Our teachers are heavily burdened. They are unofficially tasked to ensure that our children receive an education while also ensuring they feel super safe- all at the same time. That is a lot.

There is a plethora of politicians that believe we should arm our teachers, in my opinion that is not a good idea. There is a group of other politicians simultaneously trying to create a safety plan that would put metal detectors along with armed officers at every school. There are many ideas these politicians have from changing the legal age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21 which would require more red flag laws. These ideas are great, but the bigger question is- will this stop gun violence?

The best way to change the good old boy’s politics system in Texas is to use your right to vote this year. This year not only is our Governor seeking to be reelected but so is our Lt.Gov. Dan Patrick.  If you want to see laws change, we need to vote for new leadership. We can still hold marches, chant our demands, and be heard audibly but until we use our right to vote then our voices will remain unheard.  So far the ideas from the Senate have completely left out assault weapons being banned and they also left out a federal ban on military-style assault weapons, another measure Democrats have been pushing in recent years, citing mass shootings that have involved such weapons.

Let us keep all families in our prayers as they are still trying to heal from all these shootings. We also need to pray that all these politicians will have enough common sense to make the right choices when trying to create new gun laws.
