San Antonio City Introduces Vibrant Urban Park Adjacent to Market Square
The Pass at Market Square, located at 514 W. Commerce St., beneath I-35 between Dolorosa and Commerce streets, was unveiled last Saturday. This colorful haven has swing chairs, ping pong tables, basketball court, and captivating murals. Open to all, a protective fence encloses the space, with security personnel present between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
City Facilities Administrator Amanda Reyna envisions The Pass as a family-friendly gathering spot, aiming to bring the community together at Historic Market Square for weekend enjoyment. Assistance will be available for those who wish to borrow basketballs or ping pong equipment, requiring prior reservation at marketsquareSA.com.
Photos reveal vibrant primary colors adorning the brickwork, forming circles and squares that stand out against the highway’s dull backdrop. The park resides in the transitional zone connecting Market Square and the highway access road, a collaborative effort involving the city, UTSA, the 8020 Foundation, and others to revive and reimagine the area.
The future reveals further enhancements. “This fall, we’re going to be inviting some local artists to paint murals on the columns that we have here in the area,” Reyna explained. “So, this October, we’ll be presenting that to the public as well.”
