The Choice To NOT Serve Underserved Communities In San Antonio

Community Development: Engagement and Improvement

As we begin 2023, we are now seeing continuing evidence of the need for community members to become more engaged and aware of our surroundings, as well as of the existence of long standing obstacles to both change and progress, in our community infrastructure. Those conditions lead to debilitating results and a continuing negative influence on our standard of living and the quality of life, in our community.

In many instances, it has become obvious that our community is often the last to be made aware of or to learn about new laws taking effect, the availability of increases in government benefits or restrictions in housing or medical services. These voids have always resulted in the stifling of the community’s growth and prosperity, putting us at a greater disadvantage than other communities of the same size. Communication of information is not being disseminated amongst those whose purpose it serves.

What must we do differently?

We must seek a greater influence, via broadcast, print and social media, in order to better combat the negative effects of disinformation and of its companion – misinformation, both of whom have the ability “to get a ride across town before the truth gets out of bed!” Beginning with the dissemination of more accurate information, residents will be better armed with additional tools, which will be useful in implementing specific strategies designed to produce positive growth and further result in community enrichment.

Where do these strategies originate?

Initially, they will require an increase in collaboration, between neighbors, neighborhood associations, from community and faith – based organizations, recognizing how open communication can lead to positive outcomes.

These groups must come to a consensus, agreeing on what works for the community and satisfies the community’s needs.

Last but not the least, we must make a commitment to do the work, identifying the common goals and what paths must be chosen in order to reach those goals.

Change requires work and work is known to produce results, which are then celebrated and enjoyed by all!
