The 2026 United States Senate election in Texas will be held on November 3, 2026. The winds of political change are often difficult to judge, let alone to maneuver successfully, particularly in these difficult times. Here is the overview of how this race may shape up:
30 Years Without a Democratic Senator
The state of Texas has not had a Democratic U.S. Senator since Robert Krueger briefly held the seat, in 1993.
It appears that there’s a possibility of the Democrats being able to flip a Texas Senate seat, for the first time, in over three decades, according to a new poll.
The upcoming race is literally “heating up”, as a few sources have pointed out.
Cornyn’s Long Hold and a Possible GOP Clash
First off, the seat is currently held by John Cornyn, who has been in the Senate, for over thirty years. Sen. Cornyn may be getting challenged, in the Republican primary, by current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Cornyn has reportedly indicated that he’s “not worried” about a primary challenge. Paxton himself has a bit of political baggage, in the form of his legal history and what has been described as “rising unpopularity among general voters.”
A Blue Challenger Emerges
Looking ahead, Democrat Colin Allred is now seen as a real competitor against Republican Ken Paxton, according to a new GOP poll. Allred, a former U.S. Congressman and NFL player, could become the first Democratic U.S. Senator from Texas in over 30 years, which would flip a long-held red seat blue.
Big Names in the Mix
As the Republican primary intensifies, and big names like Beto O’Rourke consider jumping in, the possibility of having a Democratic Senator increases.
Allred has said, in March 2025 of a potential bid, “I’m looking at it and seriously considering it. This is a time for everybody to realize just what’s at stake and how important it is that we all stay involved.”
Other GOP Contenders on the Horizon
According to press sources, U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt (R) has reportedly discussed entering with Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, while a PAC has run ads across the state about Hunt’s biography.
Former U.S. Rep. and 2018 Democratic nominee for Senate Beto O’Rourke said when asked at an April 2025 town hall:
“If it comes to pass that this is what the people of Texas want, that it’s the highest and best use of what I can give to you, then yes I will [run].”
The Clock is Ticking
Although there hasn’t been any other possible candidates to make their intentions known, time is of the essence, for voters to become galvanized and organized, such that the People choose who will best represent their interests going forward.
