One weekend in college football brought major shifts in the US LBM Coaches Poll, as Texas has taken the top spot for the first time since 2008. The Longhorns narrowly edged Alabama, receiving 29 out of 55 first-place votes, finishing just nine points ahead of the Crimson Tide. Texas’ return to the No. 1 position signals a significant moment for the program, which last held the honor on October 26, 2008.
Alabama surged after an impressive win against Georgia, earning 19 first-place votes, securing the No. 2 spot. Ohio State, holding steady at No. 3, claimed the remaining seven first-place votes after winning its Big Ten opener against Michigan State. Tennessee also benefited from the weekend’s chaos, moving up to No. 4 despite being on a bye. Georgia dropped to fifth after suffering its first loss.
Other major shake-ups include Mississippi and Utah, both of whom fell in the rankings after home defeats. Mississippi slid to No. 11 following a loss to Kentucky, and Utah tumbled to No. 18 after being upset by Arizona.
Meanwhile, Oregon, Penn State, and Miami (Fla.) all saw slight improvements in their standings, moving up to No. 6, No. 7, and No. 8, respectively. Missouri leapt to No. 9, and Michigan returned to the top 10 after recent performances.
In addition, Indiana made its first appearance in the Top 25 since 2021, earning a spot at No. 24 after an impressive 5-0 start. Illinois clung to the final spot at No. 25 despite a loss to Penn State. Oklahoma State, after a tough weekend, dropped out of the rankings entirely.
