April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The San Antonio Municipal Court Asks the Community to Take the Don’t Drive Distracted Pledge
April is Distracted Driving Awareness month and the San Antonio Municipal Court wants to remind residents to put their cellphones down and give driving their full attention whenever they are behind the wheel. During the month of April, the San Antonio Municipal Court will be distributing road safety resources and will ask court visitors to sign the Don’t Drive Distracted pledge banner.
Cell Phone use by drivers is considered the most dangerous type of distracted driving because it combines visual, manual and cognitive distraction.
A City of San Antonio Ordinance prohibits the use of hand-held mobile communication devices to 1) engage in a call, 2) send, read or write a text message, 3) view pictures or written text whether transmitted by internet or other electronic means, 4) engage in gaming, or 5) engage in any other use of the device while operating a motor vehicle. – Even at a red light or stop sign, you are breaking the law and subject to a fine of up to $200.
In 2020, nearly 1 in 5 crashes on Texas roads were caused by a distracted driver in which 367 people died and 2,205 were seriously injured.1 Teens whose parents drive distracted are 2-4 times as likely to drive distracted.
