- Shooting suspect in custody: The suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk has been identified as Tyler Robinson and is being held without bail in a Utah jail on several charges, including aggravated murder, according to officials. He is not talking to investigators, sources told CNN.
- How it happened: Last night, one of Robinson’s family members reached out to a family friend, who then contacted authorities, according to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.
- More on the investigation: A family member told investigators Robinson spoke negatively of Kirk before the shooting, the governor said. Investigators discovered a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel, and inscriptions — including one that read “Hey fascist! Catch!” — were engraved on casings found with the rifle, officials said.
The Suspect Is Expected to Make His First Court Appearance on Tuesday, Official Says
Utah County Attorney’s Office is expecting that suspected shooter Tyler Robinson will make his first court appearance on Tuesday after attorney Jeff Gray files charges in the killing of Charlie Kirk on the same day.
“Assuming all goes as planned and we file charges on Tuesday, Mr. Robinson’s first appearance will be Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. MDT,” according to Christopher Ballard, chief of staff at the public information office at Utah County attorney’s office.
It will be a virtual hearing, he added.
Who is the Shooter?
Officials have identified the person accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk as 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced Friday morning that investigators were able to identify and arrest Robinson after reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing his family, and examining online messages with his roommate. Robinson is a University student, the son of a 40-year sheriff’s veteran, and his mother works with individuals with disabilities. His family is registered Republican, and he once dressed as Donald Trump for Halloween. However, investigators say private messages show Robinson did not share Charlie Kirk’s political views.
