Will Steve Bannon Re-Ignite His Political Influence After Prison?

Steve Bannon to Be Released from Prison This Week Bureau of Prisons Says, Despite His Attempts for Earlier Exit

Steve Bannon, the former Trump aide and controversial right-wing podcaster, will be released from federal prison on October 29, completing his 120-day sentence for contempt of Congress. This comes despite Bannon’s recent push for an earlier release and his claims that the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) acted with political motives by denying his request for home confinement.

Steven Bannon’s Push for Early Release Denied

Bannon had argued for leniency, supported by his legal team, who cited provisions from the Trump-era First Step Act that allow some first-time federal offenders the chance to transition to home confinement. According to a letter from Derek Puzio, the acting warden of FCI Danbury, there simply wasn’t enough time to facilitate Bannon’s request, as home confinement requires at least 30 days for processing.

“Mr. Bannon has insufficient time on his sentence to process a referral and secure approval for ten days of home confinement placement,” Puzio wrote, explaining that regional reentry management could not make an exception for shorter placements.

The January 6th Subpoena Case and Steve Bannon’s Sentence

Bannon’s prison sentence stems from his refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. His appeal of this 2022 conviction remains ongoing. While incarcerated at the low-security Danbury facility, Steve Bannon initially served as a library orderly and later taught history and government civics to fellow inmates, according to his prison consultant, Sam Mangel.

Steve Bannon’s Release and Political Influence Ahead of the 2024 Election

Bannon’s release will likely reignite his political influence. His podcast, War Room, has continued to air during his time in prison, maintaining a loyal following of listeners. As a staunch supporter of former President Trump, Steve Bannon is poised to return to his role as a vocal political provocateur, with an impact that could be felt in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

Ongoing Legal Battles: Bannon’s Upcoming Fraud Trial

Despite his impending release, Steve Bannon’s legal battles are far from over. He still faces criminal charges in New York for his role in the “We Build the Wall” fundraising campaign. Accused of defrauding donors who contributed to the campaign, he has pleaded not guilty to charges including money laundering, conspiracy, and fraud. A trial for this case is scheduled for December, adding another chapter to the legal challenges that continue to follow the former White House strategist.
