St. Patrick’s Day Festival & River Parade Weekend Lineup

San Antonio Goes Green for St. Patrick’s Day with a Weekend Full of Festivities

San Antonio is turning shamrock green again this year as the St. Patrick’s Day Festival & River Parade returns to La Villita and the River Walk on March 15-16. Whether you’re Irish or just Irish for the day, this free, family-friendly event is a great way to celebrate.

From watching the San Antonio River turn bright emerald green to enjoying live Irish music, traditional dancing, and an artisan market, this festival offers plenty to do. And, of course, the well-known St. Patrick’s Day River Parade will bring Irish culture to the heart of downtown.

The Weekend Lineup: What You Don’t Want to Miss

The Dyeing of the River Green

One of San Antonio’s well-known traditions is the eco-friendly dyeing of the river—yes, the water will be glowing green. The transformation happens at different times and locations:

Saturday, March 15
• Museum Reach: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• Downtown Section: 1:00 – 3:00 PM
• Sunday, March 16
• Downtown Section: 1:00 – 3:00 PM

This tradition dates back to 1969, inspired by similar celebrations in Chicago, and has become an annual event in San Antonio.

Best Viewing Spot: The bridges along the Museum Reach or anywhere near La Villita and the Arneson River Theatre downtown. Arrive early for a front-row spot.

St. Patrick’s Day Festival

The heart of the celebration is the St. Patrick’s Day Festival at La Villita Historic Arts Village, running both days from 1:00 – 6:00 PM.

Expect:
• Live Irish music – from upbeat pub songs to traditional Celtic melodies
• Authentic Irish dancing – high-energy performances that will have you tapping your feet
• Face painting and family activities – fun for all ages
• Irish food samples – taste traditional Irish flavors
• An artisan market – shop for handmade goods, jewelry, and art

Best Spot to Enjoy: Grab a bite and a seat near the live music stage at La Villita and take in the atmosphere.

St. Patrick’s Day River Parade

The highlight of the weekend is the St. Patrick’s Day River Parade on Saturday, March 15.
• Museum Reach Section: 2:00 – 3:00 PM
• Downtown Section: 5:30 – 6:30 PM

The decorated river barges, covered in green, will glide through the San Antonio River Walk, featuring music, performances, and festive decorations from Irish and local cultural groups.

Best Viewing Spots:
• Arneson River Theatre – best for entertainment, but it fills up fast
• Along the River Walk between Presa & Navarro Streets – great views with easier access
• Museum Reach near Pearl – if you want a less crowded, quieter experience

Parking & Transportation: Plan Ahead

With thousands expected to attend, getting there early is important. Here are the best parking options:
• St. Mary’s Garage (205 E. Travis St.) – Close to River Walk action
• City Tower Garage (60 N. Flores St.) – Free on Sunday
• Hemisphere Garage (623 Hemisfair Blvd.) – Short walk to La Villita
• Ride-share drop-offs – Best near La Villita or Rivercenter Mall
