Spurs’ Playoff Hopes Take a Hit as VDub Is Sidelined for the Season
If the Spurs are going to make a run at the playoffs they will have to do it without VDub. The Spurs phenom will miss the rest of the season as a result of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. This concludes another disappointing year for both VDub and the Spurs as his second season ends, potentially without a playoff appearance.
On the season VDub is averaging 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks on 48% shooting from the field. He’s also shooting 35% from beyond the arc.
Following Sunday’s 114-96 loss to the Pelicans in New Orleans the Spurs are 3-6 as they wrap up this year’s Rodeo Road trip with 3 games remaining. The team is 3-7 in its last five games and doesn’t return to the Frost Bank Center March 1 against the third place Memphis Grizzlies.
At 24-31 the Spurs occupy the twelfth seed in the West, four games behind Sacramento (29-28) who holds the tenth and final playoff play-in tournament slot. While the playoffs aren’t completely out of reach, the path will be arduous at best.
Recently acquired De’Aaron Fox is averaging 22 points and 7 assists, and will be called upon to fill the void left by VDub. Wemby’s absence will also give players like Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson an opportunity to really earn their money. Both players are on the downside since signing contract extensions averaging 15 points and 12 points respectively.
The team will have an opportunity to gain some momentum when they face the struggling Pelicans next.
