Well Spurs fans the 2024-25 season is essentially over for the boys in silver and black.
The squad lost Sunday’s matchup at the Frost Bank Center; their first home game in over a month, 146-132 to the Western Conference leading Oklahoma City Thunder (49-11).
Despite clinging onto a five point lead at the break, the Silver and Black were unable to close out what ultimately was a high scoring game. Oklahoma City opened the second half on a 13-4 run.
After setting a franchise record with 16 3-pointers in the first half, the Spurs were 0 for 8 on 3s in the third quarter.
San Antonio’s 16 3-pointers in the first half was just two shy of tying the NBA record for most 3s in any half.
Jalen Williams had a career-high 41 points, Shai Gilgeous-Alexanderadded 31 for the Thunder. Rookie guard Stephon Castle had 32 points to lead San Antonio, which has lost five of its last six games and is just 3-7 over the last 10 games. Castle is the fifth rookie in Spurs history with multiple 30-point games.
It’s been a whirlwind for the Spurs during their month-long trek away from the Frost Bank Center. In that time the Spurs acquired De’Aaron Fox, lost All-Star center Victor Wembanyama for the season to a blood clot in his shoulder, signed 14-year veteran Bismack Biyombo to two 10-day contracts, and Gregg Popovich announced he will not return as head coach this season.
The Spurs are just 2-5 since announcing Wembanyama was done for the season, following a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. At 25-34 the team has fallen back to the 13th position in the Western Conference, a game and a half behind Portland who has leapfrogged the Spurs for twelfth.
The team will likely miss the playoffs again unless something miraculous happens down the stretch. The drought is now at six years since the last playoff appearance in 2019.
