Spurs’ Fourth-Quarter Run Sinks Rockets

A Fourth-Quarter Surge Helped the Spurs Overcome a 16-Point Deficit Against the Rockets

The Spurs overcame a 16-point deficit last night on the road in Houston to hand the Rockets just their fourth home loss of the season.

The Silver and Black defeated their I-10 rivals 111-99 behind V-Dub’s 28 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks.

Trailing most of the game by as many as 16 points; and down by 11 with about eight minutes left in the third quarter, the Spurs used a 16-4 run to make it 79-78 at the 2:15 mark of the third quarter. Keldon Johnson had nine points in that stretch and Harper added four points.

V-Dub scored nine of his game high 28; with five free throws, to power an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter that put the Spurs on top 95-86 with less than eight minutes to go.

The lead was cut to five after a pair of free throws from the Rocket’s Alperen Sengun but the Spurs responded with a 10-4 run to run the score up to 107-96 with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

Amen Thompson had 25 points and Kevin Durant added 24 for the Rockets. Sengun had 18 points with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

A key factor in the game was bench play. The Spurs had 38 points come from the bench including 17 from KJ while Harper kicked in 16.

The team’s struggles continued from long range as they shot 6-26 (23%) from distance. The squad managed to offset the poor shooting by hammering the Rockets in the paint. The Spurs had an astounding 72 points in the point to Houston’s 48.

Last night’s win was a big win in terms of Western Conference positioning. A loss would’ve thrust the Spurs into a 3-way tie for second with the Rockets and Nuggets with 16 losses apiece. Instead, the Team took care of business and remain solely in second place behind OKC. The win also gives the Spurs a 2-1 lead in the season series going into final matchup March 8 at the Frost Bank Center.
