Brian McKnight’s Estranged Son Niko Dies at 32

News broke this past weekend that the 32 year old son of the 55 year old Grammy nominated singer succumbed to his battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by both the singer’s ex wife Julie McKnight and brother Claude McKnight.

Niko had been a musician and photographer in his own right. He had confirmed his cancer diagnosis in a 2024 post on Instagram. His father has yet to comment on his son’s death.

McKnight had long been enthralled in an intense estrangement with his eldest sons- Niko and his older brother Brian McKnight Jr. An estrangement that made its way to the press in 2019. Writer Corinne Heller, in her 2025 article for E News!,

“Brian McKnight’s Estranged Son Niko Dead at 32”, writes, “in 2019, he responded to rumors about his relationship with his eldest children. ‘I’m not abandoning them,’ he said in a YouTube video. “We are estranged…then in April 2024, Brian drew more controversy by calling his eldest children a ‘product of sin’ in an Instagram comment. Following the backlash, he said in an Instagram video, ‘in order to live a life that you love, you have to get rid of the evil and the negativity, even if that evil and negativity is related.’”

Fans and the social media community alike have had opinions about the father-son rift and with the news of Niko’s passing, much is continued to be discussed. There are no reports of if McKnight and his late son had resolved their issues prior to his son’s death but it is clear that much of the internet is framing this under the guise of a cautionary tale. Writer Lawrence Ware, in his 2025 article for The Root, writes,

“Black men, learn from the mistakes of Brian McKnight. Vow never to repeat them. You do not want to leave anything unsaid when it comes to your kids. They should know every day that they love them deeply… even if you don’t love everything they do.”

Dynamics around Black families is something that has long been constructed by a myriad of variables: cultural, racial, and gender dynamics all influence the connections between Black family members. Within the McKnight family, a fourth variable is also present: fame. Let this be not only a cautionary tale about father – child estrangements but also a discourse on how race, gender, and class influence Black family dynamics.
