Simone Biles: Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year

Simone Biles: Redefining Gymnastics, Sparking Change, And Making An Unforgettable Comeback.

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year. This recognition celebrates not only her unparalleled achievements in gymnastics but also her profound impact on the sport and her inspiring journey of resilience and personal growth.

A Remarkable Comeback in Paris

Biles’ return to the 2024 Paris Olympics was nothing short of extraordinary. After withdrawing from events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to the “twisties”—a mental block that left her disoriented mid-air—Biles took a two-year break from gymnastics. Her comeback was marked by remarkable performances, including four medals in Paris, three of them gold.

In the team event, Biles executed a flawless Yurchenko double pike vault, a move so challenging it bears her name. Despite aggravating a calf injury during the competition, she scored an impressive 59.566 in the all-around, securing her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Coach Cécile Landi reflected on the moment, saying, “We’re all breathing a little bit better right now. I’m not going to lie.”

Reflecting on Her Legacy

At 27, Biles is redefining what it means to be a gymnast. Historically dominated by teenagers, gymnastics now sees seasoned athletes like Biles, who leads a team with an average age of over 22, the oldest in U.S. history. Her influence extends beyond medals, inspiring a new generation of gymnasts, particularly Black athletes, to see greater possibilities in the sport.

“I don’t think the reality has set in of what I’ve exactly done in the sport,” Biles admitted. “Maybe I’ll realize it a few years after I retire and look back like, ‘Damn, she was good.’”

Considering Life Beyond Gymnastics

Biles has hinted that the Paris Games may mark the end of her competitive gymnastics career. As she contemplates the sacrifices required to continue competing—time away from her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, and the possibility of starting a family—she is candid about her priorities.

“Because I’ve accomplished so much, there’s almost nothing left to do,” she told Sports Illustrated.

Despite the uncertainty of her Olympic future, Biles remains at peace with her decisions. “I’m humble enough to know when to be done,” she said, acknowledging the fine line between ambition and contentment.

“When you’re younger, it’s prom, college. Now it’s like, starting a family, being away from my husband. What’s really worth it?”

Inspiring a Generation

Biles’ influence extends far beyond her routines. Her resilience and authenticity resonate with fans of all ages. During her post-Olympic tour, young admirers filled arenas to cheer her on, finding inspiration in her ability to overcome adversity.

Maddie and Katie, two 13-year-old fans, described how Biles’ journey has shaped their outlook on life. “She realizes that if you respond to mean people with anger, they’ll just keep doing it,” Maddie said. “You’ve just gotta ignore them, and one day they’ll be praising you.”

A Lasting Legacy

Biles’ impact on gymnastics is undeniable. From breaking barriers for Black athletes to demonstrating that success in the sport isn’t limited by age, she has reshaped what is possible. While her future in competition remains uncertain, one thing is clear: Biles has already secured her place in history.

As she reflects on her achievements and considers her next chapter, Biles exemplifies the grace and determination that have defined her career. Whether she steps back onto the Olympic stage or not, her legacy as the Greatest of All Time is unquestionable.
