“Senior Centers Got Talent”

City Celebrates Senior Center Month with Talent Shows

COSA News — The City of San Antonio Department of Human Services will celebrate National Senior Center Month in September with open houses and various activities highlighting the healthy, active, and independent lives of residents 60 years and older.

The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) has designated September as National Senior Center Month. This year’s theme is “Powering Connections.”

During the first two weeks of September, each Senior Center will host an intra-center talent show – “Senior Centers Got Talent” – where their top three talents will be selected to participate in a semi-finals event on September 20 at Walker Ranch Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. From the semi-finals, 10 contestants will be selected to compete at the final talent show on September 27 at Southside Lions Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Department of Human Services older adult programming provides a community where older adults can engage, enrich, enlighten, and empower themselves with a full complement of wrap-around services focusing on health and wellness, case management, technology instruction, nutrition education, exercise, social and cultural activities. Comprehensive senior centers provide an extensive volunteer program allowing participants with the opportunity to volunteer, make friends and have fun. The 11 City-operated comprehensive senior centers serve more than 3,500 older adults every day.

This spring, the NISC bestowed national accreditation on the 11 comprehensive centers for meeting national standards of excellence for senior center operations. The accreditation is for five years.
