Second Chance Job Fair Returns This Wednesday

Second Chance Job Fair Returns to San Antonio, Creating Pathways to Redemption and Inclusive Employment

Hope is real for justice-involved individuals and others seeking a fresh start. On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert will host the latest Second Chance Job Fair at the Freeman Coliseum Expo Hall, continuing a ten-year legacy of economic justice and second chances.

Since its launch in 2015 during Calvert’s first year in office, the job fair has been a cornerstone of his approach to equitable economic development. As Chair of the Bexar County Reentry Council, Calvert has transformed advocacy into results, creating a space where employers, workforce agencies, and community partners come together to see formerly incarcerated individuals, veterans, and others with employment barriers as potential—not problems.

“Since launching this initiative, I’ve been guided by one truth,” says Commissioner Calvert.
“When we give people a second chance, we don’t just reduce recidivism—we restore families, rebuild neighborhoods, and rekindle hope. This job fair is more than a career opportunity. It’s a declaration that no one should be defined forever by their worst mistake.”

From Missed Opportunities to Statewide Model

The job fair’s origins trace back to the $105 million renovation of the AT&T, now Frost Bank, Center. When early phases failed to include East Side workers, Calvert launched the event to ensure fair local hiring. That action laid the groundwork for what has become a statewide model for reentry success.

In a city where over one in five residents face barriers to employment—whether due to a criminal record, unstable housing, or lack of job training—the Second Chance Job Fair provides more than hope. It’s part of a larger strategy to empower overlooked talent and build stronger, more resilient communities.

“As someone who has picked up trash with constituents, fought to clean up blight, and built coalitions across political lines, I believe government works best when it works for everyone,” Calvert said. “And this job fair is how we make that belief real.”
