San Antonio, proudly known as Military City USA®, has been chosen to host the Department of Defense Warrior Games in 2026 and 2028. This marks the first time our city will host this significant event, showcasing the strength, resilience, and determination of wounded, ill, and injured military service members and veterans as they compete in adaptive sports. This honor is especially poignant given the recent controversy surrounding former President Donald Trump’s disparaging comments about veterans, comments that starkly contrast with San Antonio’s deep respect and unwavering support for our military community.
The Warrior Games, which include events such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, cycling, and indoor rowing, play a crucial role in the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors. These games are more than just a display of athleticism; they symbolize the indomitable spirit of our service members, who continue to inspire us all through their perseverance and dedication.
San Antonio was initially scheduled to host the Warrior Games in 2020, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic. The announcement that our city will finally host the games in 2026 and 2028 is a testament to the strong commitment we have to our military community. “We will ensure that the commitment and sacrifice of our wounded, ill, and injured warriors will be deservedly recognized by the citizens of San Antonio,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “We look forward to hosting these Games and welcoming the athletes as family to our great city.”
As the nation grapples with Trump’s history of derogatory remarks toward military members—calling fallen soldiers “suckers” and “losers”—San Antonio’s decision to host the Warrior Games reinforces our city’s core values of honor, respect, and gratitude toward those who serve. The Games will not only highlight the physical achievements of these athletes but will also serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military members, which should never be taken lightly.
Maj. Gen. Juan G. Ayala (USMC, Retired), the City of San Antonio’s Director of Veteran and Military Affairs, expressed his enthusiasm: “I can’t wait for our community to see the incredible athletes whose perseverance and resiliency are an inspiration to all who will witness these events.”
As we prepare to welcome the Warrior Games, let us reflect on the contributions of our military members—whether active duty, veterans, or wounded warriors. In a time when their sacrifices are sometimes disparaged, San Antonio remains a beacon of support and pride for those who have given so much for our nation.
San Antonio’s hosting of the Warrior Games is more than an event; it’s a statement that in Military City USA®, we honor and celebrate our heroes with the respect they deserve.
