San Antonio To Host 2025 HBCU All-Star Basketball Game

San Antonio to Host 2025 HBCU All-Star Basketball Games

San Antonio will welcome the 2025 Men’s and Women’s HBCU All-Star Basketball Games, showcasing top talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The games are scheduled for Sunday, April 6, at Freeman Coliseum, fitting perfectly between the NCAA Men’s Final Four games at the Alamodome on Saturday and Monday.

Celebrating HBCU Excellence and Heritage

Announced during a news conference at City Hall by Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Travis L. Williams, CEO and founder of the HBCU All-Star Games, the event will feature 24 male and 24 female student-athletes. This marks the debut of the Women’s HBCU All-Star Game, adding a new dimension to the annual celebration of athletic and cultural contributions.

“This game is about honoring the rich heritage and promoting the success of these remarkable athletes,” Williams said. “It’s an epic moment to show the world that HBCUs matter and celebrate the best in Black college basketball during Final Four weekend.”

A Boost for San Antonio

Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert Jr. emphasized the positive impact the event will have on the local community. “This event will not only showcase exceptional talent but will also bring new opportunities and positive energy to our city,” Calvert said. He praised Williams’ vision, noting the importance of highlighting Black student-athletes’ accomplishments.

The Legacy of HBCUs

HBCUs have played a pivotal role in U.S. history, emerging after the Civil War during the Reconstruction era to provide African Americans access to higher education when many institutions excluded them. Today, they continue to foster educational and cultural advancement.

San Antonio’s own St. Philip’s College, established in 1898, stands as the city’s only HBCU, deeply connected to the region’s heritage and educational progress.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The 2025 HBCU All-Star Games mark the fourth year of this growing tradition, which was held most recently in Phoenix, Arizona. The addition of the Women’s game underscores the event’s evolution and commitment to celebrating diverse athletic achievements.

With its blend of talent, heritage, and community impact, the HBCU All-Star Basketball Games promise to be a highlight of San Antonio’s sports calendar, offering fans and the city an opportunity to embrace the legacy and future of Black college basketball.
