Fred Brock Post No. 828 awards Student Aid
Fred Brock American Legion Post No. 828 is dedicated to the advancement of today’s youth. Success in a competitive world involves education and training. To support the third pillar of The American Legion: Americanism, the Post will award $2,000 in student aid shared by four organizations with the city during 2024-2025.
Continuing to assist college students with the costs of attaining a higher education, the Post awarded two nursing school students with financial aid during a GSK Speaker Program held at Myron’s Prime Steakhouse, July 25.
Post Commander Burrell Parmer presented Hallmark University student Q. Monet Wilson and Galen College of Nursing student Micheal Brooks with $250 each. Both students were selected for the monetary awards by Theta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
Theta Eta Chapter is a professional nursing organization which continues to promote nursing through community service in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention, leadership development, mentoring, recruitment, retention, and assisting in the education of the next generation of student nurses by providing scholarships.
On July 26, Parmer presented Sam Houston High School’s We R One organization with a certificate and monetary award of $500 for Nasir Ahmad Edward Salaam who will be attending the University of Texas San Antonio. The presentation was held during We R One Scholarship Mixer held at the Post. We R One strives to create relevant innovative and meaningful programs and fundraisers to restore Sam Houston High School’s pride and extend opportunities for past and present students to participate in various community building efforts to include charitable activities yielding lifelong memories.
“We believe that the more knowledge our young people gain, the better citizens they will become and that is why Post 828 is committed to education,” said Parmer. “Investing in the education of our young people is investing in the future of our country.”
Other organizations whose selectees will receive Post 828 assistance include the Moussa Temple No. 106 (Prince Hall Shriners) and 19th Masonic District Council (Prince Hall Freemasons).
The mission of Post 828 is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military, and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
