Weapons Exchange Happening This Friday at the Alamodome
San Antonio District 9 Councilman John Courage is inviting the community to participate in the second annual Voluntary Weapons Exchange event, aimed at promoting safety and reducing gun-related incidents. This initiative, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 24, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alamodome parking lot, offers participants a unique opportunity: trade in firearms for H-E-B gift cards to help ease those grocery bills during the holiday season.
Through this drive-thru event, individuals can voluntarily and safely surrender firearms or ammunition, no questions asked. The exchange incentivizes participation with gift cards of up to $200 per weapon, depending on the type:
• $100 cards for shotguns or hunting rifles
• $150 cards for pistols or handguns
• $200 cards for assault weapons or AR-15-style automatic rifles
Each vehicle can turn in up to 10 guns and receive one card per firearm. While toy guns, props, ghost guns, and broken firearms will not qualify for gift cards, they will still be accepted for safe disposal. All surrendered weapons and ammunition will be securely destroyed.
Councilman Courage emphasized that the event helps reduce accidents and thefts, contributing to safer neighborhoods. Last year’s overwhelming success saw over 900 firearms removed from circulation and 300 gun-safe locks distributed, demonstrating the community’s commitment to a safer San Antonio.
Whether you’re looking to clear out unused firearms or simply want to contribute to community safety, this program also offers a way to offset rising grocery costs just in time for Thanksgiving.
