SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino Announces Retirement

San Antonio ISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino Says He Will Remain in the Role Until His Planned Retirement in 2027

San Antonio Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Jaime Aquino announced Friday that he plans to retire in January 2027, concluding a 40 year career in public education.

Aquino has served as superintendent of SAISD since 2022. His announcement gives the district nearly a year to begin planning for a leadership transition.

“This was not an easy decision,” Aquino said. “I look forward to spending more time with my family, whom I have, for many years, unintentionally placed second to the demands of this work.”

District Leadership and Priorities

During his time leading SAISD, Aquino focused on initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes and expanding academic opportunities across the district.

The district has also emphasized student engagement and efforts to strengthen connections between schools, families, and the broader community.

Aquino said he plans to continue leading the district through the remainder of his tenure.

Superintendent Search Ahead

With the retirement announcement now public, the SAISD Board of Trustees is expected to begin the process of selecting the district’s next superintendent.

District officials said details about the search process will be announced in the coming weeks.

Aquino said he intends to remain focused on the work underway in the district until his retirement takes effect in early 2027.
