San Antonio’s Advanced Learning Academy (ALA) rock band, Within, is taking their talent to the national stage. The student-led group has been selected to perform at the Association for Popular Music Educators’ national conference at the University of Memphis in June 2025—a major milestone for the band, which formed three years ago through the SAISD Modern Rock program.
Comprised of senior Viviana Villanueva and juniors Marissa Esparza, Kathleen Juarez, and Evan Bohmann, Within has been building a strong local presence, playing at venues like Tandem and The Rock Box. Now, they’re raising funds for their trip to Memphis by booking more shows, including an upcoming performance on Thursday, February 13, at the Josephine Theater (339 W. Josephine St.) from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
With hard work and dedication, these young musicians are proving that their rock star dreams are well within reach.
