San Antonio ISD Welcomes Six Inductees to Athletic Hall of Fame
The San Antonio Independent School District celebrated athletic excellence and community pride on Saturday, honoring six new members of its Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held at the Alamo Convocation Center, drew a sold-out crowd of 440 people who gathered to recognize the contributions and legacies of the 2025 class of inductees.
This year’s honorees represent decades of achievement on the field, in the gym, and on the sidelines. The inductees include Ray Davis, a standout from Sam Houston High School’s Class of 1983; longtime Brackenridge coach Willie Hall; and Weldon Humble, honored posthumously from Brackenridge’s Class of 1940. Also recognized were Guido Merkens, an Edison High School graduate from the Class of 1973 who went on to play professionally, and Sharon Neugebauer-Shepard, Jefferson High School’s Class of 1981 and one of the district’s most accomplished female athletes. Rounding out the class were the Lanier High School basketball teams of 2000 and 2001, remembered for their back-to-back dominance on the court.
Each inductee was presented with a commemorative plaque, designed as a replica of the one that will be permanently installed in the newly renovated Wall of Fame at Alamo Stadium. For many, the moment was a chance to reflect not only on personal milestones but also on the lasting impact of school athletics across generations of San Antonio students.
“Congratulations to all our class of 2025 inductees,” district officials announced, underscoring the pride and tradition that comes with joining the prestigious Hall of Fame.
As the plaques are mounted at Alamo Stadium, the accomplishments of Davis, Hall, Humble, Merkens, Neugebauer-Shepard, and the unforgettable Lanier squads will stand as a lasting reminder of how SAISD athletes and coaches have inspired the city for more than a century.
