As this year is now into its second month, we are, once again, celebrating Black History Month, with the latest celebration taking place at San Antonio College, an integral part of the Alamo Colleges District.
The February 6th event, held on the College’s Mall area, featured a number of Black small businesses, which offered a variety of services, information as well as brisket breakfast tacos or barbeque chicken tacos.
In the featured groups, there were CPR training and active shooter classes, another business offered “Life and Business Coaching”, along with Dreambuilding, including Confilict Resolution and Vision Workshops, designed for business minded people.
San Antonio College’s Library displayed a number of Black History books, designed to increase a person’s awareness of overlooked contributors, such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Henry Louis Gates (The Bkack Church), and The Vanguard, which chronicles the actions of “Black Women that broke many barriers, won the vote and who insisted on equality for all.”
Attendees also heard remarks, from Dr. Frank Solis, regarding thr consuderable contributions of Black and African businesses and educators, as well as my having spoken with Dr.Barbars Knotts, learning how this year’s theme – Black Resistance, was selected.
I also encountered a longtime friend, learned that she has taught a course on “How To Be Successful In College”, for forty-four years.
In closing, the Theme was well defined, having added tables, with Black Art, Physical Fitness and Homeowner Assistance information.
This month’s celebration will span the remainder of February and will be offering great speakers, with insight into the Black Perspective!
