A Historic Gift: Prairie View A&M University Receives $63 Million From MacKenzie Scott
Prairie View A&M University is entering a new era of confidence and momentum after philanthropist MacKenzie Scott awarded the institution a transformative $63 million gift, the largest single donation in PVAMU’s history. Combined with her groundbreaking $50 million contribution in 2020, Scott’s total investment now stands at $113 million, signaling deep trust in the University’s mission, impact, and long-term vision.
The renewed support builds on five years of measurable progress sparked by Scott’s initial unrestricted donation. That early investment strengthened academic programs, expanded student support, and laid the groundwork for institutional growth that is now shaping PVAMU’s future.
“This gift is more than generous — it is defining and affirming,” said Prairie View A&M University President Tomikia P. LeGrande. “MacKenzie Scott’s investment amplifies the power and promise of a Prairie View A&M University education as we advance our vision of becoming a premier public, research-intensive HBCU that serves as a national model for student success.”

Scott’s latest donation comes as Prairie View A&M reaches its highest enrollment ever — 10,106 students — expands academic offerings, and accelerates its long-term strategic plan, Journey to Eminence: 2035, aimed at strengthening research capacity and student outcomes.
The new $63 million will be invested into three major priorities:
- Expanding student success initiatives, including additional scholarships, academic support, and retention programs.
- Strengthening faculty research and innovation in high-demand fields like AI, cybersecurity, agricultural sustainability, public health, education, space exploration, and social policy.
- Growing the University’s endowment to secure long-term financial stability and academic excellence.
The effects of Scott’s first gift in 2020 are still visible across campus.
Funds were directed toward need-based scholarships and emergency assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping thousands of students stay enrolled. For many, this support was the deciding factor between stopping out and earning a degree.
Unrestricted funding allowed PVAMU to expand advising, tutoring, and first-year programming — key drivers of rising student persistence and strengthened academic pathways.
A notable portion of the initial gift created the Toni Morrison Writing Program, allocating $3 million to honor the iconic Nobel laureate. The program continues to attract nationally recognized visiting authors who lead writing-intensive courses and support student creative work.
PVAMU used part of the early funding to strengthen its financial footing, increasing endowment capacity and expanding the University’s long-term stability.
These advancements turned Scott’s first donation from a historic moment into a catalyst for sustained transformation.
Scott’s continued support affirms the University’s forward momentum and growing reputation as a leading public HBCU.
“Philanthropy of this magnitude and intentionality reimagines how progress and scale are realized,” President LeGrande said. “MacKenzie Scott’s commitment to PVAMU is a testament to what happens when vision aligns with opportunity.”
The new gift isn’t just a continuation — it is a charge to push further, expand opportunity, and shape what Prairie View A&M can imagine for generations to come.
