Post 828 assists Families of local Elementary Schools
To assist local families on the East Side during the holiday season, Legionnaires, Unit Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion of Fred Brock American Legion Post No. 828 donated $1,500 in H-E-B gift cards to 30 families of students attending Booker T. Washington Elementary, Nov. 16, and Dorie Miller Academy, Nov. 17.
According to Post Commander Burrell Parmer, the post’s Children & Youth Program is guided by three main objectives: to strengthen the family unit, work with quality organizations that provide services for children, and provide communities with well-rounded programs that meet the needs of young people.
The post strongly supports traditional family values, assistance for at-risk children and activities that promote their healthy and wholesome development.
“We are happy to be able to assist some of our young students and their families in our community with some funds to have a good Thanksgiving Day meal,” said Parmer. “Many of us are blessed, and we should bless others as well.”
According to Martha Ortega, a school counselor at Dorie Miller Academy, the school is thankful for the donations.
“Partnering with organizations, such as The American Legion, is how we all can work together and meet the needs of our students,” said Ortega. “This is going to give them a much brighter Thanksgiving Holiday.”
“Special thanks to H-E-B for its sponsorship and to the Post 828 family for their monetary donations,” said Parmer.
Dorie Miller Elementary was originally opened as W.W. White School No. 2 in 1947 to serve the African-American children who lived in the Lincolnshire community.
It was named after Doris “Dorie” Miller, a U.S. Navy Sailor who on Dec. 7, 1941, while serving aboard USS West Virginia (BB-48), distinguished himself by courageous conduct and devotion to duty during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on this occasion.
Fred Brock Post No. 828’s mission is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s veterans, their families, the military, and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
