Portion of Quincy Jones Catalog Sold to Investment Firm

Deal Includes Select Quincy Jones Music and Entertainment Assets, Stakes in ‘Thriller,’ ‘Off The Wall,’ and ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Portions of Quincy Jones’ expansive catalog have been sold to investment firm HarbourView, marking a major acquisition involving one of the most influential bodies of work in modern music history.

The deal encompasses select music and non music assets owned by the late producer and musician, including recorded music and publishing rights tied to some of the most recognizable projects of Jones’ career.

According to reports, the transaction includes Jones’ stakes in the trilogy of Michael Jackson albums he produced, Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad.

Deal Includes Television, Film, and Sampled Works

The acquisition also includes one of Jones’ best known compositions, Soul Bossa Nova, which later gained renewed popularity after Ludacris sampled the track for his hit song Number 1 Spot.

The agreement extends beyond music recordings and publishing. Rights connected to television and entertainment properties were also included, such as Jones’ participation in the hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and George Benson’s 1980 smash hit Give Me The Night.

The deal also grants HarbourView rights tied to Jones’ name, image, and likeness.

Catalog Spans Generations of Music

Jones’ catalog spans decades of music history and reaches across multiple genres and generations.

His influence can also be heard in hip hop through songs that sampled his work, including Kanye West’s Good Life and Tupac Shakur’s How Do U Want It.

The producer had a hand in shaping music, television, and film throughout his career, working with artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson.

Family Says Deal Protects Quincy Jones’ Legacy

Jones’ daughter, actress Rashida Jones, said the family sought a partner that understood the scope of her father’s creative legacy and the responsibility of protecting it.

“Our father was endlessly curious and always ahead of his time,” she said in a statement.

“Long before anyone talked about multi platform, he was already building bridges and connecting the dots across music, film, television, publishing, technology and culture, creating iconic juggernauts like Thriller, The Color Purple, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Vibe.”

She added that the family views the catalog not only as a collection of works but as a legacy that must be preserved.

“What made him extraordinary was his ability to see around corners and bring together the right people, ideas, and sounds to create timeless work again and again. As his children, our responsibility is to protect not only the catalog, but the spirit and love behind it.

HarbourView understands that legacy and has the vision and expertise to help ensure that future generations can feel the full scope of his everlasting impact.”

HarbourView Expands Its Portfolio of Music Rights

HarbourView CEO Sherrese Clarke described the acquisition as a meaningful addition to the firm’s growing portfolio of music rights.

“He’s an omnipresent force in creative spaces,” Clarke told Rolling Stone.

“We’ve got a number of iconic works in our portfolio, but adding someone like this to how we see our job as stewards and holders of canons of work for future generations, it felt like a blessing.”

HarbourView has completed similar catalog acquisitions in recent years, with artists including T Pain and James Fauntleroy selling portions of their catalogs to the company for millions of dollars.

Jones, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant and prolific musical minds of the twentieth century, died in November 2024 at the age of 91.

Over the course of his career, he helped shape generations of music and entertainment, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence artists and audiences around the world.
