Meals on Wheels continues serving clients and managing home delivery logistics for Jimenez Dinner
Celebrating Thanksgiving Day as the pandemic endures remains a challenge for Meals on Wheels San Antonio. This year’s holiday will be managed by the nonprofit in three ways:
- Thanksgiving Day is the first day this year MOWSA is able to serve a warm meal to clients
- Meals on Wheels is in its second year collaborating with the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner to help the Jimenez organization manage the logistics for this year’s delivery of approximately 3,500 home-delivered Thanksgiving meals. Meals on Wheels has devised the delivery route plan and is providing onsite support to the Jimenez team to manage the home delivery logistics.
- COSA Senior Centers will distribute frozen Thanksgiving meals made by Meals on Wheels — 400 on Monday, Nov. 22, and 1,400 on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Delivery on Thanksgiving is also different for Meals on Wheels’ typical volunteers. Additional volunteers support the effort and are trained on COVID-operations the nonprofit follows. From cooking to manning the robust drive-thru pick up system, or helping at the Convention Center, Meals on Wheels San Antonio will be bustling to nourish neighbors in need! Meals on Wheels San Antonio staff will screen delivery volunteers, provide them with face masks and hand sanitizer, and train volunteers on COVID-19 style delivery methods. Additionally, this may be the last Thanksgiving Day meal made in the tight kitchen at the Babcock office. Next year MOW hopes to be in their new headquarters with more area to cook and feed more.
Thanks to the generosity of H-E-B, approximately 3,500 homebound MOW clients will receive a hot Thanksgiving Day meal and a caring greeting on the holiday. Meals will include: turkey, stuffing, trimmings, sweet potato casserole, seasoned greened beans, and pumpkin pie.
