Nominations Open for the 2024-2027 San Antonio Poet Laureate

Honorary position will promote poetic arts and literacy in the community

City of San Antonio News — The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture is seeking nominations for the 2024-2027 San Antonio Poet Laureate with a deadline to submit by January 31, 2024, at 4 p.m. CST.

The Poet Laureate is an honorary position whose role is to serve as an ambassador of the City of San Antonio. The individual selected will serve a three-year term and receive an honorarium of $3,500 per year served.

“The Poet Laureate Program exists to cultivate greater appreciation and understanding of poetry and enhance local literacy initiatives,” said Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones. “This position collaborates closely with our team to inspire and educate our community through the promotion of literary arts.”

Timeline

November 20, 2023 – January 31, 2024: Nomination window is open.

February: Eligible nominees will be reviewed by a committee of nationally accomplished poets and a selection of past San Antonio Poets Laureate.

March: Highest rated nominee will be notified of their selection.

April: The newly selected Poet Laureate will be appointed during National Poetry Month at an Investiture Ceremony in City Council Chambers.

The United States Poet Laureate was established in 1937 and the State of Texas has appointed a Poet Laureate since 1932. In 2012, San Antonio was the first major Texas city to appoint a Poet Laureate. This new appointee will serve as San Antonio’s seventh Poet Laureate.
