New CBS Series Makes History as the First Black Soap Opera in 35 Years

Beyond the Gates: First Black Soap Opera in 35 Years to Premiere on CBS

Beyond the Gates is making history as the first Black soap opera in 35 years, set to debut on CBS on February 24. The show will air weekdays on CBS at 2 pm ET/1 pm PT and stream on Paramount +.

The groundbreaking series follows the legacy of Generations, which ended in 1991, and marks a significant moment for daytime television.

A Glimpse Inside the Teaser

The first teaser, released on December 16, offers a look at the Dupree family, a symbol of Black excellence, residing in a luxurious gated community outside Washington, D.C. Highlighting their influence and prominence, one character proclaims, “Your family rules this community,” while another states, “This is going to make history. How awesome is that?”

A Stellar Cast Brings the Dupree Family to Life

The series stars Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie as Vernon and Anita Dupree. Vernon, a former senator, is depicted as gentle and humble, while Anita, a former singing sensation, embodies strength and grace as the family’s matriarch.

The Duprees’ daughters bring additional depth to the story. Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson, played by Daphnee Duplaiz, is a successful psychiatrist and philanthropist navigating a complex personal life. Meanwhile, Dani Dupree, portrayed by Karla Mosley, is a former model turned momager who gave up her career for love.

Behind the Scenes: From Concept to Creation

Initially titled The Gates, the show began production in November and was penned by Michele Val Jean, celebrated for her work on General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful. The series promises to deliver engaging drama with a fresh perspective.

Impact and Expectations

Sheila Ducksworth, president of CBS Studios’ NAACP venture, emphasizes the importance of this series. “This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television,” she said. Beyond the Gates is poised to redefine representation and storytelling in daytime TV.

Mark your calendars for February 24 to witness history in the making with Beyond the Gates on CBS.
