Protesters Gather in All Over the Country For a ‘Hands Off!’ Rally Against Trump and Musk
In a sweeping wave of demonstrations across the United States, thousands of protesters gathered from New York to Alaska for the ‘Hands Off!’ rallies. Their message was clear: opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration and its policies, which they believe are adversely affecting the nation.
This marked one of the largest coordinated efforts to regain momentum for a movement that has been challenging the Republican administration since Trump first took office.
Mass Mobilization Across the Country
The ‘Hands Off!’ demonstrations spanned more than 1,200 locations across all 50 states, organized by over 150 groups including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LGBTQ+ advocates, and veterans. These peaceful rallies saw no immediate reports of arrests, signaling a unified yet non-violent dissent.

From Midtown Manhattan to the remote stretches of Anchorage, Alaska, and multiple state capitols, the protests were a nationwide affair. Demonstrators criticized both Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who, as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, has been a key figure in the administration’s downsizing efforts. Concerns were raised over government downsizing, economic policies, immigration, and human rights.
Protesting Economic and Social Policies
On the West Coast, under Seattle’s Space Needle, activists held signs like “Fight the oligarchy,” while in Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles, chants echoed through the streets. Demonstrators expressed anger over the administration’s policies including the firing of thousands of federal workers, closing Social Security offices, and cutting funding for health programs.

Musk, who also runs Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, defended his role, claiming taxpayer savings in the billions. However, protesters argue that the cost comes at the expense of federal workers and essential services.
Voices of Resistance
The White House responded by stating that President Trump remains committed to protecting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible recipients. The administration accused Democrats of policies that would bankrupt these programs by extending benefits to undocumented immigrants.

Kelley Robinson, leading the Human Rights Campaign, addressed a rally at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where Democratic congress members joined the chorus of disapproval. Robinson lamented the administration’s treatment of the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing that the attacks are personal, not just political.
Seeking a Different America
In Boston, signs like “Hands off our democracy” and “Hands off our Social Security” reflected a widespread sentiment. Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her desire for a world where diversity and equality are not under threat from governmental policies.

Protesters in Charlotte, North Carolina, rallied for issues ranging from education and immigration to women’s reproductive rights. Britt Castillo, a Charlotte resident, captured the essence of the protest, stating, “Regardless of your party, what’s happening today is abhorrent.”
A Movement Reignited
As Trump golfed in Florida, the opposition movement, reminiscent of the significant turnout during the 2017 Women’s March and the Black Lives Matter protests, showcased its resilience. Their collective voice resounds with demands for a government that listens to its people, one that respects the democratic values and social protections that many feel are under siege.
