NAACP Image Awards Reflect Celebration and Solidarity After BAFTA Incident

Michael B. Jordan and Sinners Lead 57th NAACP Image Awards Winners

Stars gathered for the final night of the NAACP Image Awards, where “Sinners” entered the ceremony as the leading film nominee.

The Image Awards crown winners over multiple nights across categories including film, television, music, books and more. Saturday’s ceremony at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium marked one of the final stops of Hollywood’s awards season and arrived as Black History Month drew to a close in the United States.

Hosted by comedian Deon Cole and broadcast live on BET and CBS, the ceremony honored established icons and breakthrough talents alike.

Sinners Dominates the 57th NAACP Image Awards Winners List

At the heart of the evening, Ryan Coogler’s genre-defying film Sinners dominated the ceremony, sweeping major categories including Best Motion Picture and acting honors.

Ryan Coogler’s Academy Award nominated horror film “Sinners” emerged as the night’s biggest winner, collecting 11 awards.

While accepting Best Motion Picture, Coogler thanked the audience for embracing the film.

“Since our people been here over four centuries, there’s always been a lot of lies told about us,” Coogler said. “A lie, no matter how powerful the person saying it is, it’s still a lie. The truth, no matter how little power the person that’s saying the truth is still the truth. Y’all are loved, y’all are beautiful, and y’all are powerful and mighty.”

Among the major wins:

  • Best Motion Picture: Sinners
  • Best Actor in a Motion Picture: Michael B. Jordan
  • Entertainer of the Year: Michael B. Jordan
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor: Delroy Lindo
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress: Wunmi Mosaku

In his first public comments since the incident at the BAFTAs, Delroy Lindo thanked the NAACP audience, calling it an “honor” to be present among “our people.”

“I’d just like to officially say, I appreciate, we appreciate all the support and love we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend. It means a lot to us,” Lindo said.

He described the moment as “a classic case of something that could be very negative becoming very positive.”

The BAFTAs issued a full apology to Lindo and Michael B. Jordan after guest John Davidson, who has Tourette’s Syndrome, shouted a racial slur while the two actors were presenting an award. The BBC did not edit the moment out of the delayed broadcast.

Earlier in the Image Awards ceremony, host Deon Cole and actress Regina Hall acknowledged Lindo and Jordan. Quinta Brunson also offered support while accepting her award.

“We see you,” Brunson said. “We’re behind you … love you.”

The crowd responded with a standing ovation for Lindo and Jordan.

What began as an awards show evolved into a statement: when faced with public disrespect, the response can be unity.
