First, Happy New Year, and welcome to 2022. As we’re starting this new year, it seems that we once again are fighting a new pandemic that is causing some schools to close and return to virtual learning. So, the questions remain the same how can we protect everyone, how can we teach via zoom, and how will this affect our child’s education. Then as we face another pandemic, many teachers are retiring or quitting, which has become an enormous burden on our children. Recently I read an article where they asked 3rd and 5th graders what the world would look like in 20 years, and most said we would be living on another planet, riding in flying cars and that teachers would be in the classroom as a hologram. All these ideas seem to be something out of a science fiction movie, but without a good education, then these ideas could never happen. All of this could have a tremendous effect on our futures as children around the country may never learn the fundamentals of math and reading. The other issue is how our children will learn to interact with others in society. As technology upgrades, we see our children using different apps to talk to their friends. This worries me because our children may feel uncomfortable with in-person activities. Parents, we are living in uncertain times, with limited answers and no cure so far; all we can do is hope that tomorrow will be better. The only thing we can do is practice safety protocols and if you choose to get vaccinated, then know you could save your life and others.
Lastly, as our teachers are leaving, I pray that our children will receive a good education if it means using our school’s auditoriums to have larger classes. Parents, we are all going through some rough times and our lives, but please remember our teachers work endless hours trying to help our children. We must all remember that most teachers have a life outside the classroom.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at lena.lopez@saobserver.com. Until next week, let’s work together to help all children in San Antonio ISD. Please stay safe, wear a mask, and practice social distancing.
Have a Blessed Week, Lena Lopez
