Disney-Marvel Movie Brought in Another $15 million According to Studio Estimates Sunday, When Most of Hollywood’s Attention was on the Oscars
Despite declining numbers, “Captain America: Brave New World” maintained its lead at the box office during an underwhelming Oscars weekend. The Disney-Marvel film earned an additional $15 million, bringing its total to $163.7 million since release. While the Anthony Mackie-led movie opened strong with $120 million, it experienced a significant second-week drop to $28.2 million, one of the steepest declines for a Marvel film.
A Critical and Commercial Struggle
The film faced criticism from both audiences and reviewers, failing to deliver the Marvel resurgence that some had hoped for. With upcoming releases like “Thunderbolts” in May and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” in July, the pressure is on to reinvigorate the franchise. However, “Captain America: Brave New World” may continue to hold the top spot due to limited competition throughout March.
New Releases Fail to Impress
The weekend’s only major newcomer, Focus Features’ “Last Breath,” debuted at No. 2 with $7.8 million. The survival thriller, based on a true story, follows a deep-sea diver trapped 300 feet underwater. Starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, and Chris Lemons, the film received strong reviews, with critics praising its suspenseful storytelling.
Independent Films Make Their Mark
Neon’s horror thriller “The Monkey,” directed by Oz Perkins, secured third place with $6.4 million, pushing its two-week domestic total to $24.6 million. The film follows Neon’s previous success with “Longlegs,” which grossed $126.9 million globally. Meanwhile, “Paddington in Peru” landed in fourth place with $4.5 million, bringing its total to $31.4 million.
