A Legacy of Harmony: Sam Houston High School Band Director, Bruce Adams, Honored by Manilow Music Project
Bruce Adams, the dedicated band director of Sam Houston High School, recently received a prestigious award from the Manilow Music Project, a recognition that underscores his profound impact on the school and its community. Growing up, Adams watched Barry Manilow on television, never imagining that one day he would receive an award from the legendary singer-songwriter himself, he shared with SAISD.
In a competitive selection process, up to ten schools in each tour city vied for the coveted award, with the winner chosen by community vote. Adams was deeply moved by the overwhelming support telling SAISD that, “It was a humbling experience to walk into the grocery store and have community members recognize me and say, ‘Hello Mr. Adams. I am voting for you daily,’” he recounted.
On July 1, Adams received the exciting news of his victory. The award includes $5,000 in new band instruments for Sam Houston’s program and an additional $5,000 for Adams to spend as he chooses. Furthermore, he will attend Manilow’s concert on August 15 to officially receive his award. This occasion will be particularly special for Adams, who recently discovered that Manilow’s drummer is his former college fraternity brother. “It will be exciting to connect with him on that day,” Adams remarked.
An alumnus of the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), Adams attended Gates and Hirsch Elementary Schools, Davis Middle School, and graduated from Sam Houston High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University and has dedicated 27 years to teaching in SAISD, with 17 of those years spent at Sam Houston.
Adams began his teaching career at Herff and Carroll Elementary Schools in the 90s, later moving to M.L. King Middle School for seven years before joining Sam Houston. Known for his iconic marching band, Adams has cultivated strong relationships with his students and the community, making this award a testament to his dedication and passion.
“Mr. Adams has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled dedication to his students, a passion for music education, and an unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment,” said Sam Houston Principal Dr. Nakeshia Bibbs. “His impact on our school community is immeasurable.”
Excited about the upcoming concert and the opportunities the award brings, Adams reflects on the support from his community. “I am grateful that my community and friends saw fit to keep up the voting fight until the end. The monetary prize means we can further the education of the students by purchasing items that the students may need,” Adams expressed.
With heartfelt gratitude and a commitment to his students, Bruce Adams continues to inspire and enrich the lives of those at Sam Houston High School, ensuring that the music never stops.
