Magic Johnson Pledges $500K to Xavier University

Magic Johnson Helps Raise $2M for Scholarships at Xavier’s 100th Anniversary Gala

NBA icon and business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson pledged $500,000 to Xavier University of Louisiana during its Centennial Gala, helping the historically Black university push toward its $2 million fundraising goal for student scholarships.

The celebration, held May 9 in New Orleans, marked 100 years since Xavier’s founding in 1925. Hosted by comedian Bill Bellamy and featuring a performance from R&B legend Jeffrey Osborne, the event drew alumni, community leaders, and public figures together to honor Xavier’s rich legacy—and invest in its future.

A Tribute to Dr. Norman Francis’ Lifelong Commitment

Johnson’s generous pledge was made in honor of Dr. Norman C. Francis, the university’s president emeritus who served for 47 years. During his tenure, Dr. Francis tripled enrollment, expanded academic offerings, and positioned Xavier as one of the nation’s top institutions for Black students pursuing careers in medicine and STEM.

“The mark of a great man is who shows up,” Johnson said during his remarks. “In your honor, I’m going to give Xavier $500,000.”

Dr. Francis’ impact is still deeply felt across the campus, especially in Xavier’s mission to uplift Black students through access, opportunity, and excellence.

Supporting the Next Generation of Black Scholars

With a current enrollment of about 3,400 students, Xavier stands as the only historically Black and Catholic university in the United States. It remains a leader in producing Black medical school applicants and STEM graduates—fields where racial equity remains a national priority.

Magic Johnson’s donation will directly support scholarships that help first-generation students, underrepresented talent, and aspiring health professionals complete their degrees and continue Xavier’s legacy of producing changemakers.

Magic’s Legacy Off the Court

Since retiring from the NBA, Johnson has become a powerhouse in business and philanthropy. His Magic Johnson Foundation focuses on economic empowerment, education, HIV/AIDS awareness, and leadership development in underserved communities.

The $500,000 pledge to Xavier is just the latest example of Johnson’s deep commitment to uplifting Black communities—not just through inspiration, but through real investment.

As Xavier looks ahead to its next century, Johnson’s contribution helps ensure the university will continue opening doors for generations of Black scholars to come.
