Letitia James, the New York Attorney General Who Defeated Trump in Court, Indicted by Justice Department
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a longtime critic of Donald Trump, has been indicted on a fraud charge in the Eastern District of Virginia, according to a source who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The charge stems from a mortgage fraud investigation and marks the latest in a growing list of Justice Department prosecutions against figures who have publicly opposed the former president.
James’ office has not commented on the indictment, which remains under seal. The single-count case follows the Trump administration’s removal of Erik Siebert, a veteran prosecutor who reportedly resisted pressure to bring charges. Siebert was replaced by Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide and former Trump attorney with no prior experience as a federal prosecutor.

Political Retaliation Allegations Grow
The case against James arrives just two weeks after former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on separate charges of lying to Congress. Both prosecutions have fueled accusations that the Justice Department is being weaponized for political retribution.
Trump has publicly called for James to face criminal charges, frequently attacking her on social media and alleging—without evidence—that she is “guilty as hell.” James’ lawyer has denounced the case as a “bogus political hit job,” saying it was designed to punish her for leading the civil fraud lawsuit that resulted in a massive judgment against Trump and his company last year.
Broader Pattern of Targeting Trump Critics
James’ indictment fits into a broader pattern of politically charged investigations. Federal officials have also pursued mortgage-related allegations against Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook and California Senator Adam Schiff, both prominent Democrats. Schiff’s attorney has described those allegations as “transparently false, stale, and long debunked.”
James, a second-term Democrat, has maintained her innocence, saying that while she made a clerical error on a home loan form, she corrected it immediately and did not deceive any lender. As attorney general, she repeatedly sued Trump and his administration, winning a landmark civil fraud case that found the former president had misled banks by inflating the value of his properties.
Trump’s Long-Running Feud with James
The former president’s feud with James dates back years, intensifying after her office secured a half-billion-dollar judgment against him earlier this year. Although an appeals court later reduced the penalty, it upheld the core finding that Trump engaged in fraud.
Now, with Trump’s allies in control of the Justice Department, the indictment of Letitia James underscores the deep politicization of federal law enforcement and raises questions about whether justice is being served—or weaponized.
