Toward the end of her video, the 29-year-old shared:“I want to share everything I learned with you, because this is my greatest dream of all.” The Illinois native added:“All it takes is one of us to unlock a door to unlock a million doors for each other. I’m so excited to introduce you guys to Key TV, where our stories matter and where we are represented as the keys to the culture.”In a caption, the “Akeelah and the Bee” actress took to Instagram and wrote:“I’ve been doing this for 20 years, but this is what I’m most proud of. Y’all always say I keep a job, now I’m making sure we ALL got one. Sharing the keys to the culture is my greatest gift – this is for you & for us, from me. #keystotheculture #keytvnetwork”Palmer is a child star who is best known for her stardom on Nickelodeon. In 2016 Palmer released the song “Actually Vote” urging Americans to submit their ballots in time for the 2020 presidential election.
“The last four years have been increasingly overwhelming for our nation,” the actress told PEOPLE. “It’s created, I believe, a feeling of apathy that’s dangerous to our sense of democracy as a society.”
She added: “I think it’s so important that we get a hold of what’s ours and get excited about using our voices. So many of my peers and I have been made to feel like our voices are not valid. I know that’s part of the game and I have fought to make myself aware that my voice does matter. All of our voices matter so significantly. I want my peers to know and understand.”
“We must make voting an engaging tradition for all [including] Black [people], women, LGBTQ+, our immigrants [and] everyone,” says Palmer. “Together, we can make it trendy to vote and make each of our important voices heard.”
Palmer pays homage to World War II icon Rosie the Riveter throughout the upbeat music video produced by Broad City’s Ilana Glazer for Generator Collective.
The song’s lyrics are as meaningful as its title. The message is even stronger today and this election round. Freedom is on the ballot in many forms.
With Palmer’s new platform, as owner of her own TV network we are sure to see her using all of her resources even more to inspire, not only the black community, but everyone to vote.
With elections approaching this November 8th, we urge everyone to ‘check the box!’.
