Tatum Rejoins Duke in a Historic New Role of Mentorship, Leadership, and NBA-Level Insight
Boston Celtics star and former Blue Devil Jayson Tatum is officially returning to Durham — this time off the court. Duke men’s basketball announced that Tatum will serve as the program’s first-ever Chief Basketball Officer, a volunteer position introduced by head coach Jon Scheyer.
In his new role, Tatum will act as a mentor and advisor to current Duke players, sharing lessons from his All-NBA career. He’ll offer guidance on leadership, player development, and the transition to professional basketball — areas where his experience as one of the league’s elite scorers can make a tangible impact.
Elevating Duke’s Program Standards
Beyond mentorship, Tatum will collaborate with Scheyer and the coaching staff on roster strategy and program development, ensuring Duke maintains NBA-caliber standards both on and off the court. His appointment marks another chapter in the Blue Devils’ effort to blend collegiate excellence with professional-level preparation.
